Here are 5 simple steps to start preparing for an emergency that take very little time, and won't empty your wallet.
Emergency Preparedness on a Small Budget

1- Refill any hard plastic juice container with water and store it.  Make sure you clean it out well to prevent mold. And when you store it, remember it will take on the flavor of whatever it is sitting on, so off the ground is best.
2- Have two 5 gallon gas containers full at all times.  This will get you 200 miles away if you need to leave a disaster area and you won’t be the one stuck in line at the gas station when the gas runs out. Also, refill the gas in your car when it gets down to half a tank instead of waiting until you are empty.  It costs the same amount, but makes a big difference on the day of a disaster.
3- Buy some cheap, solar, rechargeable lights and keep them in your yard.  If the power goes out, you won’t have to wonder where a flashlight is and if the batteries are dead.  These lights are GREAT to have in an emergency.  You can find them at your local Wal-Mart for a couple bucks, or click on the pic to get them off Amazon. If you spend a little more, you can get some that have an on and off switch, which is a nice feature.

4- When you go shopping, buy 2 or 3 extra of any non-perishable food items or toiletries that you need.   I don’t know about you, but I don’t always have a stash of cash on hand when the case lot sales come around.  This is a way I can slowly build up my supply within my budget. Before you know it, you will have a shelf full of food.
5- Slowly build up an extra supply of toilet paper as well as diapers and wipes if you have a baby.  Buy an extra package as often as you can, especially when it is on sale, because imagine life without toilet paper…. Or maybe don’t.  It can get ugly really fast.

Hopefully, this post will give you the courage to take the first steps to start preparing for an emergency. You will never regret it.
