3 Ingredient Natural Weed Killer
Living on 5 acres in the beautiful south has it’s pros…and cons.
Pro: Everything is beautiful and GREEN! I never have to water my lawn or my plants. Mother nature does all of that herself here.
Con: Along with watering my beautiful plants, EVERYTHING else gets watered, including all the WEEDS!
I went out several days in a row and spent hours weeding just the front of my yard. That night there was a storm with a ton of rain. I am not lying when I say that the next day I went outside to find hundreds more weeds had showed up. I realized very quickly that I needed to come up with another way to kill the weeds or I was NEVER going to keep up with all of them. Several friends recommended I just use Round up and be done. The problem with that is, I’m in the early stages of pregnancy and didn’t feel good about spraying any toxic chemicals. Truthfully, I’ve never felt comfortable with it EVER. If it’s dangerous during pregnancy, it sure ain’t good for you any other time either!
I finally talked to a sweet lady who literally saved my life and my property. She gave me this recipe for a natural weed killer that is not only completely harmless but uses ingredients I already have in my house. It’s also CHEAPER than Round up!
Here are some pics BEFORE and 24 hrs AFTER I attacked my weeds with this blessed spray!
Here are the ingredients for just over a gallon of spray. You can use a spray bottle if you just have a small area, but if you have a whole lot of weeds like me, you will want to invest in one of these lawn and garden sprayers. They are inexpensive and will save you a TON of time!
1 Gallon Vinegar (I just used Wal-Mart generic brand)
2 cups Epsom Salt (can be found in the isles by the pharmacy)
1/4 cup Dawn Dish soap
Spray bottle or Sprayer
I used a medium-sized pan to heat up a quart of vinegar and added my epsom salt and just stirred with a wisk till it was all dissolved. Then I added it to the sprayer with all the rest of the ingredients. You will want to add the hot vinegar last so it doesn’t melt your spray bottle if it’s a cheap one. Also, pour slowly so you don’t end up with half a bottle of suds!
The vinegar draws moisture out of the plant thus killing it in the process. The sun is your best friend for this. It will magnify the power of the vinegar! Spray during the hottest part of the day and make sure there isn’t rain in the forecast for at least 24-48 hrs.
I’ve heard that salt can permanently make not only weeds not grow back but anything you plant in the soil after. I’m not sure if it’s the same story for epsom salt but I would avoid spraying this in soil where you want to plant something later. Same goes with your plants. This will kill them too so only spray on weeds!
Also, some of the weeds needed a second application later to completely kill them off, but most of them were dead and gone after several days. YAY!
Only 3 ingredients and a few minutes of your time and you have a natural weed killer that WORKS! What have you got to lose other than some pesky annoying weeds? Go for it!
